On Saturday, an opinion poll said the French public favoured Macron over Hollande by 35 points.

In the event of a runoff, however, both sides could lose.

Hollande, the former Social Democrat (PS) who is one of Hollande’s most prominent critics, won the presidency by a huge margin in May.

Hollande has insisted that the presidential system must be altered to avoid a repeat of May’s vote.

As part of that, he had requested that the vote, known as a second round, be held at the beginning of the following year.
