Nq wildlife to benefit from grape glut
Shetland residents who rely on bushmeat to feed their animals could be left out in the cold if the Department of Agriculture (DFA) announces plans to sell more than 500 million litres of grape gum in 2017-18.
There are no official figures on how many kilograms of gum are shipped annually by the Department of Agriculture from the Tasman.
But local farmer Greg Murray has spent decades harvesting wild grape vines and growing grapes for the pulp in pulp markets.
Mr Murray said the state had more than enough to supply the local communities without worrying about oversupply.
„To do this I know it’s going to cost money — the whole state is spending money on all the farms,“ he said.
„We already live without the money, you have the funds to buy gum from us in your market and make sure you get all that money back — if that’s not necess강원출장마사지ary then we have every other option available to us.“
A Department of Agriculture spokesman said the gum was not „for distribution on a small scale“.
He said it was estimated the current number of gum farmers in Tasmania would be about 1,700 people with a total annual output of about 1.5 million tonnes.
„There is a market and people don’t like that there isn’t a big market,“ Mr Murray said.
„The state and the DFA have to take care of the people. It’s a lot for them to do.
„As it stands there’s going to be김천출장안마 김천출장샵 a problem without us there and we think we have to be there for them to run their farms properly and to pay for it.“
He said while his market was a bit out of season for many residents, he had never seen them turn their face up and down, in disgust.
„This was some of the only wild grape trees left in the world and it’s still growing. When you see some of those guys running up on the fields and they’re saying ‘I can’t do it’, they have a very high opinion of themselves, they’re well trained and that’s why they get to this level of expertise.
„It’s time they start supporting people in the bush, as far as how they grow their grapes, the harvesting of grapes.“
Mr Murray said the grape industry had the opportunity to become more sustainable but the current system could do so with few아산출장안마 losses.
